Gamification for Cybersecurity Training

Summary
Built a gamified cybersecurity learning experience through gamification, transparency, and measurable progress that became the most engaging feature on the platform.
Problem
Companies often struggle to protect their data when employees are exposed every day to phishing emails and other common threats, amongst the rising cybercrime trends. This often provides increased risk and concern for company administrators, as cybersecurity is usually hard to understand and is easily ignored, exposing them to human error.
Goal
Introduce an easy way for employees to engage and learn in the most common cybersecurity topics, while providing admins with transparency on their progress and its impact on their company’s defenses against cybercrime.
My Role
Led the discovery and prioritization process for employee engagement and monitoring capabilities for admins.
Established a system to introduce and update training content for a growing cybersecurity learning platform.
Created and defined the gamification strategy, including a clear rewards and progression system.
Analyzed qualitative feedback and monitored adoption post-launch.
Solution design, tradeoffs, and execution
We chose to implement gamification over a traditional content library to drive employee engagement through motivation and rewards for their progress. This encouraged a more inviting and playful learning process, making it more approachable and granting employees a sense of achievement.
We prioritized transparency and monitoring capabilities for the admin after user feedback and research showed a growing concern for accurate and more easily accessible details for training progress. After growing and expanding the platform it became important to provide more context for trainings and other related activities that affected the gamification scores and systems. Increasing admins’ trust in the information meant they needed the right tools and context to encourage completion and compliance from their workforce.
Results
Increased training completion and engagement.
Improved admin confidence and trust in training progress and visibility.
Reduced frustration and confusion for scores, progress, and tracking actions across the platform.
Positive user feedback with NPS promoter rate of 55% during 2025, turning the training and gamification improvements into the most engaging feature of the platform.
Key Learnings
Gamification is a key driver for user engagement, but it works best when paired with well-established transparency for scores and progression.
Accurate and detailed training progress and score information helps both employees and admins for increased trust in the platform, and shows great importance for B2B engagement.
